Its core focus includes initiatives for hard-to-reach populations through services like outreach clinics, training of community midwives to provide low-cost health services in remote areas, screening for non-communicable diseases, and digital health solutions.
Job Summary: The Mortuary Attendant is responsible for providing support services in the mortuary by ensuring respectful handling of deceased bodies, maintaining cleanliness and hygiene of the mortuary area, assisting in medico-legal cases as per hospital protocols, and supporting documentation and coordination with concerned departments. The role ensures dignified, safe, and culturally appropriate management of dead bodies in compliance with legal and infection prevention standards.
Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan, is looking for a competent Mortuary Attendant based at RHC Shagram, Upper-Chitral in Chitral Region.
Key Responsibilities:
A. Handling and Management of Dead Bodies
- Receive dead bodies from wards, emergency, OT, or other departments and ensure proper placement in mortuary.
- Assist in shifting bodies to and from cold storage/freezer units.
- Ensure proper identification of bodies using tags/labels and maintain body numbering system.
- Assist in preparation of dead bodies for handover to families as per hospital SOPs.
- Ensure respectful and dignified handling of deceased persons at all times.
B. Support in Medico-Legal and Postmortem Cases
- Assist medical officers during postmortem examinations (where applicable).
- Prepare postmortem room and required items as per instructions.
- Ensure safe handling of evidence material and maintain chain of custody as directed.
- Assist in packing and handing over samples/specimens to concerned authorities as per procedure.
- Coordinate with police/administration staff for medico-legal documentation as instructed.
C. Infection Prevention and Safety
- Follow infection prevention and control protocols while handling dead bodies, especially infectious cases.
- Use appropriate PPE (gloves, mask, apron/gown, boots) during handling and cleaning.
- Ensure disinfection of trolleys, stretchers, and mortuary surfaces after each case.
- Support safe disposal of contaminated waste and body fluids as per biomedical waste rules.
- Assist in preparing disinfectant solutions and ensuring their proper use.
D. Mortuary Cleanliness and Maintenance
- Maintain cleanliness of mortuary room, postmortem room, cold storage area, and surrounding premises.
- Clean floors, tables, drains, washing areas, and equipment regularly.
- Ensure proper functioning and cleanliness of cold storage units.
- Report any technical faults in freezer/cold room equipment to supervisor immediately.
E. Documentation and Record Support
- Maintain mortuary register including details of deceased person, date/time of receipt, identification marks, and source department.
- Record handover details to relatives or police, including signatures and CNIC details (as per hospital policy).
- Maintain record of belongings of deceased and ensure proper safe custody.
- Assist in preparation of reports/statistics as required by hospital administration.
F. Coordination and Support to Hospital Services
- Coordinate with wards, emergency, OT, police, and administration for smooth handling and transfer of bodies.
- Support ambulance staff during shifting of bodies if required.
- Assist in managing crowd control in mortuary area in coordination with hospital security.
- Support in emergency/disaster situations involving multiple casualties.
G. Professional Conduct and Confidentiality
- Maintain confidentiality of all medico-legal and patient-related information.
- Ensure respectful behavior with bereaved families and visitors.
- Follow hospital rules, safeguarding policy, and code of conduct.
- Perform other duties assigned by hospital management relevant to mortuary services.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Matric
- Minimum 1–2 years, experience in hospital and mortuary services will be preferred.
- Training in infection prevention and handling of medico-legal cases is an advantage
- Experience in hospital/mortuary services preferred.
- Results-driven, ethical and adaptable professional with a strong service and stakeholder focus.
